This ‘Force’ never sleeps

I have December 18, 2015, marked on my calendar for the premier of Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. I can’t wait to see what Luke, Han and Leia are doing thirty years after Episode VI. And I’m anxious to see why The Force needs to “awaken.”

Has it been taking a nap?

Has it been frozen in carbonite?

Did it pass out at the Mos Eisley Cantina?

I’m glad the real Force never sleeps:

      My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble;
the one who watches over you will not slumber (Psalm 121:2-3).

In fact George Lucas’ force and God’s Force are very different.

Light and dark vs. Pure light

Star Wars‘ force is both dark and light:

[The dark side is] quicker, easier, more seductive.

Yes, a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan’s apprentice! (Episode V)

God is pure light

This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other . . . (1 John 1:5-7).

Unknown vs. Revealed

Star Wars‘ force is mysterious:

The ways of the Living Force are beyond our understanding (Episode 1).

For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere. Yes, even between the land and the ship (Episode V).

God is revealed in Jesus

So [God] became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son (John 1:14).

“But I [Jesus] will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me” (John 15:26).

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future” (John 16:13).

We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning,a whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy (1 John 1:1-4).

Disturbing vs. Peaceful

Star Wars‘ force can be disturbing

The dark side has clouded the Force . . . masking the future, is this disturbance in the Force (Episode II).

Hard to see, the dark side is.

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you (Episode I).

God’s Spirit brings peace

“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid (John 14:26-27).

May God’s Force be with you.
