Fly to the North Star:
A Carolina Country Adventure Book

David Watson

"It's time to go back!" Hundreds of voices are calling Harriet Tubman to please come back to the South again and deliver them from their oppressive slave masters. Join the African-American abolitionist and Union spy as she and four former slaves head south on an adventure that begins with hiding in a hayloft to escape capture by two plantation trackers. Be an eyewitness as the first shots of the Civil War explode over Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Hear the cries of a young lad dashing into his burning home to rescue his dog trapped in one of the fires set by William Tecumseh Sherman on his devastating "March to the Sea." Be part of the celebration at Appomattox Courthouse when the Civil War finally ends. But then feel the shock when President Lincoln is assassinated at Ford's Theater just a few short days afterward.

Join the flight to the North Star and don't stop until you have reached the land where people don't beat you and curse you and treat "like a slit hog hanging from a tree."

About the author
Fly to the North Star is David Watson's second book about the determination of slaves to risk their lives to find freedom in the North. His first book, Escape on the Underground Railroad, is currently on the recommended reading list for students in Berkeley County Schools in South Carolina. Having taught for nearly fifty years in both public and Christian schools, Watson understands the need to help students make life meaningful today by participating in the real life experiences of people from the past. Watson has had the unique distinction of being selected to Who's Who in American Schools in 1998, 2000, and 2006.
